Pre-existing Medical Conditions and Changes in Health

You were aware of or a reasonable person in the circumstances could be expected to be aware of; and

Such condition:

  1. manifested itself, worsened, became acute or exhibited symptoms which would have caused an ordinarily prudent person to seek diagnosis, care or treatment;
  2. Required taking prescribed drugs or medicine, or tests or further investigation had been recommended by a medical practitioner; or
  3. Was treated by a medical practitioner or treatment had been recommended by a medical practitioner.

2. Any congenital, chronic or ongoing condition which you are aware of, or a reasonable person in the circumstances could be expected to be aware of, before you first Activated cover.

How do I apply for Pre-existing Medical Condition cover?

If you would like us to consider cover for a pre-existing medical condition, enter your trip details here and tell us if you or your accompanying family members would like to cover pre-existing medical conditions. You will need to answer basic screening questions to confirm your trip is covered. You will also be asked to declare your pre existing medical conditions to us and answer questions specific to those conditions.

You will need to declare each and every condition that meets the policy definition of a pre-existing medical condition and any other condition that you feel is relevant to your current state of health.

The information you provide will be used to assess if we can accept your cover application and the premium that will be required for such cover.

If you are applying to cover accompanying family members, please ensure that you have authority to disclose their personal information to us. We recommend your family members review the medical declaration and validate that it is correct and that they have no other medical conditions relevant to our decision to accept or decline the application. A copy of the declaration will be available to you once completed.

Important information about Pre-Existing Medical cover applications

    • If we accept your application, then a premium will apply.
    • After you pay the required premium, your pre-existing medical conditions will be accepted medical conditions for the trip in question.
    • You are not obliged to purchase cover where it is available.
    • Applications for pre-existing medical conditions are assessed on a per trip basis. You will need to re-apply for each and every trip.
    • Each medical assessment is considered based on the trip in question and the outcome of an application can change for a different trip, even if your medical conditions are unchanged.
    • We will provide you with a copy of the information you supplied with your application. You should check this and advise of any errors that may have been made.

Changes in health before you depart New Zealand

We consider a change of health to be a change that occurs after you Activated cover but before you depart New Zealand, and to which any of the below applies:
  1. You seek treatment (or have symptoms for which a reasonable person would seek medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment).
  2. A medical practitioner recommends you undergo tests (other than routine aged based medical screening), or treatment.
  3. You are waiting for a medical appointment or further diagnostics.
  4. You suffer a new and unexpected medical event, or complication, arising from an accepted medical condition.
  5. The information supplied during your application for accepted medical conditions cover changes due to a change in prescribed medication, or a new or updated diagnosis, or a new or updated treatment plan.
You may be covered under benefit B1 Cover before you depart New Zealand, if a change in health before you depart results in you deciding to cancel or make changes to a covered trip.

  • A change in your health before you depart is a pre-existing medical condition if you decide to continue with your planned travel.  This means if you have a change in health before you depart and you continue with your travel that you may not have cover for overseas medical expenses, or any other costs directly or indirectly related to your pre-existing medical condition.
  • If you receive a confirmed medical diagnosis before your departure date you may be able to obtain cover for the new condition as an accepted medical condition by applying online using the Activation Questionnaire at asbtravel.co.nz
  • You must reapply for any accepted medical conditions cover if you have a change in health before departing New Zealand. If your new application is declined, you may be covered under benefit B1 Cover before you depart New Zealand, if the unavailability of accepted medical conditions cover results in you deciding to cancel or make changes to a covered trip.
